Metrolinx cancels GO train service on Milton line, at Hamilton GO station Thursday

Metrolinx has cancelled GO Train service on the Milton line and at the Hamilton GO station on Thursday ahead of a potential rail work stoppage.

The provincial transit agency made the decision before 10 p.m. on Wednesday as talks continued between Canada’s two major railways, Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Kansas City, and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference union.

Andrea Ernesaks, spokesperson for Metrolinx, said in an email on Wednesday night that the decision was made to provide “as much certainty as possible” to customers.

Service on all other GO lines, the UP Express and Lakeshore West line stations will not be affected, Ernesaks said.

A phased shutdown of the networks at both railways began on Wednesday as contract talks with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference near a midnight deadline.

Rail service at both companies was poised to stop at 12:01 a.m. unless a deal is reached with the union representing about 9,300 workers at both companies.

Ernesaks said Metrolinx encourages customers to plan ahead by visiting gotransit.com before travelling.
