The man who set a tent on fire at an encampment Wednesday night was not making, Hamilton police say, an “anti-encampment statement.”

Police said in a news release on Friday that the fire was “targeted against an individual” and they have found the stolen black pickup truck the suspect was driving.

They’re still looking to speak to the tent’s owner and find the suspect.

At around 8 p.m. Wednesday, a man drove the truck onto a grassy area at Wellington Street North and Simcoe Street, police say.

He got out, poured liquid from a yellow jerry can onto a tent, ignited it and then fled.

No one was in the tent at the time of the incident, police say. The tent and all of its contents were destroyed.

“This incident remains isolated, and there are no ongoing concerns for public safety in connection to this case,” police say.
