Man charged after 53-year-old killed in hit and run in Port Colborne

A 53-year-old man is dead following a hit and run in Port Colborne, Ont., according to police.

The Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) said in a Sunday news release that they believe the man was struck by a vehicle while walking on Silver Bay Road south of the Friendship Trail sometime between 10 p.m. ET and midnight on Saturday.

On Sunday night, a 37-year-old man from Fort Erie turned himself in to the NRPS, they said in an update on Monday, and was charged with failing to stop resulting in death.

Detectives from the NRPS Collision Reconstruction Unit continue to investigate.

The 53-year-old’s family began searching the area for him on Saturday night when he did not return home, police said.

The man was later found in a ditch, critically injured, police said, with damaged vehicle parts scattered near him.

Emergency services showed up to the scene at around 4:30 a.m.

“The victim was found to be in critical condition. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene,” police said.
