Two men involved in a roofing repair scam targeting seniors and other vulnerable residents have been arrested by Hamilton police.
Officers responded to a fraud report from a homeowner in the area of Barton Street East and Kenilworth Avenue North on Aug.14, police said in a news release.
The victim had been approached by two men, who told her there was a problem with her roof that needed immediate work.
“The two men were using a company name that closely resembled a legitimate company,” the release reads.
Police said the two men “used high-pressure tactics” and convinced the victim to put down “a sizeable down payment” for the work.
‘Be cautious of unsolicited contractors’
After receiving the initial funds, the two men convinced the victim more money was needed, police said, adding that it was “then that the victim realized the fraud” and contacted police.
Plainclothes officers were waiting at the victim’s home when the two men returned to collect the money from her. Both men were arrested and taken into custody.
According to police, the men are from the U.K. and arrived in Canada in late June. They have appeared before the courts and had their bail denied.
The Financial Crimes Unit believes there may be more victims across the GTA.
The unit is reminding people to:
-
Be cautious of unsolicited contractors going door to door, especially those who use pressure tactics, demand payment in cash or bank drafts, or require a large down payment.
-
Avoid making impulse decisions when hiring a contractor. Take the time to research online, seek references, and ask for recommendations.
-
Choose a reputable company and ensure you obtain a detailed written contract.
-
Obtain multiple written estimates before making a decision.
-
Remember that you are under no obligation to speak to a salesperson soliciting at your door.
-
Scrutinize an offer that sounds too good to be true.
