The City of Hamilton issued a cold weather alert for overnight Monday as temperatures are expected to drop.
The region could see a low of -12 C on Monday night with a wind chill of near -20. A high of -5 C was expected during the day.
Recreation centres and public library branches in the city will be available during regular business hours as warming spaces, according to the city.
There are also some drop-in overnight warming spaces available:
- Willow’s Place at 196 Wentworth St. N., open 24/7, which has 45 spots for women and gender diverse people.
- Mission Services: Night Link, also at 196 Wentworth St. N., open every day from 5:30 to 11 p.m., which has 25 spots for all genders.
- YWCA Carole Anne’s Place at 75 MacNab St. S., open 6 to 1 p.m., which has 40 spots for women and gender diverse people.
The city issues cold weather alerts when temperatures are at or below -15 C or -20 with wind chill.
The cold is expected to continue Tuesday with a high of -4 C and a windchill of -17 in the morning.
The city also asked that people stay indoors during a cold alert, but those who can’t, should dress in layers, protect their face, ears, hands, and feet with dry clothing, have warm drinks and avoid “strenuous exercise.”
During a cold alert, the city asked residents to check on vulnerable neighbours to ensure they have heat.
