Brantford man is charged with murder in city’s 1st homicide since 2022

A Brantford man has been charged with murder, police say, in the city’s first homicide since 2022.

On July 5, officers arrested and charged a 41-year-old man with the murder of a woman in an east-end home, police said in a news release Monday.

Around noon that day, officers responded to an emergency call about concerns for the well-being of a woman in a Hampton Street home.

There, responding officers found a 40-year-old woman who they say had died. They also found a 41-year-old man in “medical distress” who police later arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Brantford police reported zero murders in 2023

Police said the woman and the man lived together and that there is no wider threat to public safety.

Brantford Police Service spokesperson Robin Matthews-Osmond said police cannot share further information due to a publication ban.

“Next of kin notifications have been completed and out of compassion for the families, the names of the deceased and accused will not be released,” the statement said.

This is the first homicide in Brantford since 2022, according to police statistics. In 2022, police logged six murders and one attempted murder. In 2023, they recorded two attempted murders but no murders.
