A black BMW drove over the side of the Hamilton escarpment late Thursday night, falling 50 metres before it became wedged in a tree, Hamilton police say.
The driver and passenger were trapped in the car, between Mountain Park Avenue and the Sherman Access, but managed to get out and slide down the escarpment, say police.
Paramedics rescued the men, ages 31 and 29, by rope, said Supt. David Thompson.
One of the men sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local trauma centre. The other man is in stable condition, also at a local trauma centre.
Police say they received multiple 911 calls shortly after 11 p.m. reporting a car had driven through a Mountain brow parking lot fence and over the escarpment.
The access was closed in both directions overnight as the vehicle was unstable and could roll onto the road below.
By 11 a.m. Friday, roads were open again after heavy tow trucks had attached a cable to the BMW and pulled it back up onto the Mountain, say police.
No charges have been laid against the driver and the investigation is ongoing.
This is not the first time a car has gone over the edge of the escarpment near the Sherman Access.
In 2020, emergency crews rescued a man after his car went through a guard rail and fell 30 metres.
