Province announces $5M for 43 one-bedroom units in Hamilton

A housing project in Hamilton’s Landsdale neighbourhood will receive $5 million from the province in order to support 43 affordable one-bedroom units.

The funding plans were unveiled by Rob Flack, Ontario’s associate housing minister, early Monday.

He says the investment supports a project that provides housing solutions for some of Hamilton’s most vulnerable residents.

The property is located at 225 East Ave. and is home to a recently built four-story building in a century-old dairy building.

The province says the property has been purposely built to be energy-efficient and has six accessible and barrier-free units.

The building will provide residents with access to a laundry room, a kitchenette in the common space, bike storage, a courtyard, a terrace and a communal garden.

It’s situated near a hospital and grocery store and is just steps away from Barton Street, which will provide tenants with easy access to the city’s number two bus line.

A Hamilton-based Christian charity known as Indwell acquired the property in 2019.

Since then, the block has been transformed by two other housing programs.

One is known as the Heartwood Apartments, and the other is known as the Ain-dah-ing (Ojibwe for “home within our hearts)

When combined, the three properties make for a total of 108 housing units.

Hamilton’s mayor, Andrea Horwath, said she welcomes the province’s investment and called housing a human right.

“Stable housing is at the heart of a person’s physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.”

Indwell’s CEO, Jeff Neven said he is grateful for the partnership wit the province and added that “every door we open together is a permanent solution to homelessness.”

Currently, Indwell’s 13 properties across the city make up for a total of 530 units.
