The 174th Ancaster Fair returns this weekend with plans of increased police presence and safety measures to host over 50,000 attendees.
Scheduled to run the entire weekend starting Thursday evening, the fairgrounds are located on 630 Trinity Road in Jerseyville, Ont.
The fair posted on social media Wednesday letting residents know that attendees can expect to have their bags inspected upon entry, and they will have to pass through metal detectors at the gate.
The post also reads that festival goers can see both Hamilton police and additional security on site “in full force” for the entire weekend.

The added security measures follow after violent incidents occurred at the Peach Festival in August, and a separate incident involving a weapon between teenagers happened near the Binbrook Fair last week.
Last year Hamilton police opened investigations into multiple swarming incidents that happened at the fair, that involved groups of teenagers reported to have attacked people, sending them to hospital.
“Be aware of your surroundings when you come to the fair, and be mindful of what you’re bringing,” says Hamilton police officer Krista-lee Ernst in an interview with CHCH News.
“We’re going to have a zero tolerance for anything that may be utilized as a weapon.”

The fair will showcase many agricultural demonstrations, educational displays and shows that centre on livestock, crops and horticulture.
Residents can engage in all-age activities, including the three-day demolition derby, festival rides, talent shows and even pie eating contests.
The festival will run open during the following times:
- Thursday, September 19 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
- Friday, September 20 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Saturday, September 21 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Sunday, September 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The fair says that tickets can be purchased online or at the AuthentiGATE Kiosk set up at the Royal Bank on Wilson Street in Ancaster. Cash will not be accepted at the gate but debit and credit can still be used.
