The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) staged a demonstration outside Hamilton’s council chambers today, to make their opinions about the impending LRT known.
ATU members are requesting the new transit system be operated by the city, rather than a privately-owned company.
The union says a privately-owned system could create barriers to access of the transit line.
The City of Hamilton signed an agreement with Metrolinx in 2021 to build the rail system, which came with a multi-billion dollar price tag.
Construction on the new transit line has yet to begin.
Metrolinx ultimately has the final say in who will take ownership of the LRT.
ATU members say they will push back against Metrolinx if need be, but for now, they’re filing a grievance with the city.
