What’s open, closed in Hamilton, Halton, Niagara during Civic holiday

Many government offices, stores, and municipal services throughout Hamilton, Halton, and the Niagara Region will be closed for the Civic holiday.

Across the Golden Horseshoe, most city-related administrative offices will be closed. This includes licensing and by-law offices, animal services and libraries.

Banks, government offices, post offices and schools will all be closed.

Some grocery stores and Shoppers Drug Mart locations will be open case-by-case.

Additionally, the holiday will affect transit services and garbage collection. For region-specific information, see below.

Hamilton

Closed on Aug. 5:

  • In Hamilton, all city-run museums will be closed.
  • Gage Park Tropical Greenhouse.
  • All recreation centres (Outdoor pools will remain open for regular hours)

Public Transit:

  • Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) will be operating on a Sunday schedule.
  • All subscription trips with DARTS will be cancelled, except for dialysis trips. Passengers who require transportation services on Aug. 5 are asked to make an advanced reservation.

Garbage Collection:

  • All collection services on Aug. 5 have been cancelled. Green bins, blue boxes, yard waste, bulk pick up, and regular garbage collection will resume the following day.
  • Community dumps are closed.

Halton

Closed on Aug. 5:

  • Any Halton Region-run administrative office will be closed;
  • In Oakville, the Sir John Colborne Seniors’ Centre and the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts and the Mattamy National Cycling Centre will be closed.
  • In Burlington, the Tyandaga Golf Course will remain open, and the Lending Library is encouraging residents to borrow, at no cost, any of its available outdoor and indoor play equipment and lifejackets.

Public Transit:

  • Oakville Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule.
  • Burlington Transit will operate on a Sunday schedule.
  • Milton Transit will not be operating on Aug. 5.

Garbage Collection:

  • There will be no garbage collection services on Aug. 5. Pickup will resume on Aug. 6.

Niagara Region

Closed on Aug. 5:

Public Transit:

Niagara Region Transit (NRT) will have limited operations for the holiday:

  • In St. Catharines, transit services will operate between 10:45 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • In Niagara Falls, transit services will operate between 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. (WEGO will run until 11 p.m.).
  • In Welland, transit services will operate between 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • There will be no regional routes available on Aug. 5 and there will be limited specialized services throughout the region. Visit NRT’s website for more information.
