The city’s medical officer of health ended a heat warning issued for Sunday and Monday, after the city experienced heavy rains throughout the day Monday and temperatures began to cool down.
Environment Canada said earlier in the day nearly 100 mm of rain was expected, with torrential downpours likely.
By mid afternoon, much of the city had experienced that rain, and the rainfall warning ended by late afternoon. Monday evening is expected to have a low of 20 C.
The rain came Monday after two hot days and a heat warning from the agency and the city. Similar alerts were issued for the Niagara Region and Burlington.
The city and participating community agencies responded to the heat by offering “cool places” to go during all stages of a heat event. These locations can be identified by a “Cool Down Here” sign at the entrance.
As part of the city’s heat response plan, regularly scheduled Open Swims at all municipal indoor and outdoor pools were offered free of charge.
However, due to the rain, the city said its free drop-in park program, Supie, and wading pool programming were cancelled Monday and outdoor pools would be open as weather permitted.
Programming was expected to resume Tuesday, the city said.
