Wondering what’s open and closed in Hamilton during Easter ahead of the eggs-tra long weekend?
Here’s a look at what city services and shopping options are available on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Groceries, beer and liquor stores
Most retailers, grocery stores, liquor and beer stores will be closed on Friday and Sunday.
Store hours vary on Monday.
Check with the location you plan on visiting before heading out.
Local malls
Lime Ridge Mall and Eastgate Square will be closed on Friday and Sunday, but will be open on Monday.
Green cart, recycling and garbage collection
There will not be any green cart, blue box, yard waste, bulk waste, or garbage pick-up on Friday. Instead, pick-ups scheduled for that day will happen on Saturday, March 30.
Regular waste collection will take place on Monday. Garbage should be at the curb by 7 a.m.
Community recycling centres will also be closed on Friday, but will reopen Saturday. They’ll also be available on Monday.
Bus service
On Friday, buses will run on a Sunday service level, with the last trips on that schedule from downtown coming at roughly 10 p.m.
On Monday, buses will operate regularly, but routes that don’t operate on Sundays won’t operate on the holiday Monday.
HSR myRide and Route 18 Waterdown Mountaineer will not be running Friday and Monday.
Trans-Cab service will align with HSR Sunday schedules.
HSR’s customer service centre on Hunter Street will be closed, but people can call 905-546-2489 for help planning trips. The phone line is open every day, including holidays, from 7:30 a.m., to 8 p.m.
Canada Post
Canada Post is closed for Friday and Monday, which means there is no collection or delivery of mail on those days.
However, post offices operated by the private sector will be open according to their respective hours of service.
City offices
All City of Hamilton administrative offices will be closed on Friday and Monday.
Library
All Hamilton Public Library branches will be closed on Friday, Sunday and Monday. Central Library is open as a Warm Place on the first floor on March 29, March 31, and April 1, from 1 to 5 p.m., but library services won’t be available.
Regular hours will resume on Tuesday.
Public Health Services
People can call 905-546-2489 for various issues including:
- Suspected reportable diseases and food poisoning.
- Reports of environmental spills, fires, or other possible health hazards.
- Rabies animal exposures.
- Safe Water Program issues.
The public health vaccine phone line will be closed and re-open on Tuesday, but people can go online for additional options to report routine vaccines.
The Dental Health bus won’t be running Friday and Monday.
Recreation
Recreation centres and arenas will be closed on Friday and Monday.
As part Hamilton’s winter response strategy for Friday, Westmount Recreation Centre on Lynbrook Drive, Valley Park Recreation Centre on Paramount Drive and Norman Pinky Lewis Recreation Centre on Wentworth Street North are will be open from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., should they be needed. They centres will not offer additional supports or staff.
Also, all recreation centres act as a warming place during regular business hours during winter months.
ATS-DARTS
Accessible Transportation Services (ATS)-DARTS will operate on holiday service hours on Friday and weekend service hours on Monday.
The city says all subscription trips on DARTS, except for dialysis, are cancelled for these days. If people need to travel, the city says, they must make a reservation in advance.

Animal services
The city’s animal services office and shelter will be closed on Friday and Monday.
Anyone with an animal-related emergency is asked to call 905-574-3433.
Gage Park Greenhouse and Civic Museums
The tropical greenhouse will be open for both Friday and Monday, but civic museums will be closed on those days.
Hamilton Farmers’ Market
Hamilton Farmers’ Market will be closed on Friday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
It will be open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will open again on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Property taxes, parking and traffic violations
For those looking to pay property taxes, municipal service centres will be closed between Friday and Monday. They will reopen on Tuesday, April 19.
There will be no parking enforcement from Thursday at 10 p.m. until Friday at 10 p.m. and Sunday from 5:45 a.m. to Monday at 10 p.m. But proactive enforcement may occur for special events and areas of interest, the city says.
For traffic violations, the provincial offences administration office at 50 Main St. E., will be closed Friday and Monday.
Payments for parking or traffic violations can be made on the city’s website.
Ontario Works and Housing
The Ontario Works Program, including the Special Supports Program, will be closed on Friday and Monday.
The city’s housing service office at 350 King St. E., will also be closed between Friday and Monday.
