Courts consider terrorism charges for Burlington man who made incel-related threats online

A man from Burlington is facing two charges for allegedly posting threats online which prosecutors believe warrant terrorism proceedings.

RCMP say that the man used social media to “utter threats in support of the Incel ideology.”

Incel, short for involuntary celibate, is a term used for people who subscribe to a niche internet subculture that promotes an ideology of self-loathing fueled by sexual frustration which primarily targets women.

“With limited information, [investigators] were able to identify and swiftly prevent a threat to public safety,” Supt. James Parr, an officer in charge of the RCMP’s integrated national security enforcement team for the Greater Toronto Area, said.

“I am proud of the effort and ingenuity of our members and grateful for the collaboration with our policing partners in Toronto and Halton regions to advance this investigation.”

The man was first charged on April 29.

On June 21, authorities determined that the man’s offences constituted terrorism proceedings as defined by the criminal code’s definition of terrorism.

DeAndre Anderson, 24, of Burlington, is facing two counts of uttering threats.
